Mercedes Cove

Mercedes Cove Exclusive Coastal Retreat is located on the National Heritage Listed Dampier Peninsula approximately 180 kilometres north of Broome and is the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful break with your partner, family or friends.

With a choice of 3 self -contained cabins each sleeping 4 people and 2 eco tents sleeping 2 adults and 2 children, there will never be more than 18 guests at Mercedes Cove at any one time, so you can experience the spectacular scenery, pristine coastline and fascinating cultures of the Ardi region.

Pet and Dave Channing took years searching the Dampier Peninsula coastline for the perfect piece of land to set up their home and once they found the land, it took them a further 8 years to secure the lease.

Living in Beagle Bay at the time, Dave was a mechanic and floor coverer and Pet his technical assistant, but any free time they had was spent working on the property clearing the salt bush along the coastline and building a track to improve the access.

Once their home was built, they moved to the property to enjoy the tranquil surroundings and start thinking about how they could make a living, which is when they decided to build Cabins and Eco Tents for guests, so that everyone could share in the beauty of the region.

In the early days, Pet and Dave remember taking a bath, whilst enjoying the spectacular sunsets and heating it with an open fire, which was the perfect way to end a busy day. At the same time they needed to be able to communicate with family and friends so they asked Telstra to set up a satellite phone in the bush, but the challenge was that every time they wanted to make or receive a call they had to climb a ladder to improve the signal.  A job left to Dave.

Now, 18 years later Pet and Dave have built up the property into an exclusive coastal retreat, with all the modern conveniences and are respected as hospitality operators throughout the region and Australia. The retreat’s name originated from Pet’s mum Mercedes Gregory (Munget), who was born and lived in Beagle Bay with her family and the perfect choice of name for this exclusive property.

Today, anyone can visit Mercedes Cove, but keep in mind that during the 7 month season the retreat is extremely busy so bookings are a must. However, once you arrive the uninterrupted views of the ocean, the private sandy beaches to swim and fish and spectacular sunsets will welcome you. But if this isn’t enough you can snorkel in the pristine water, go kayaking, bush walking, bird watching or just appreciate the peace and quiet with family or friends on the beach whilst watching the sunset.

Another activity which has become extremely popular is the land based whale watching, as Mercedes Cove is one of the best places on the Western Australian coast to watch the Humpback Whales between July and October. And from your camp chair overlooking the ocean you will feel that you could reach out and touch the whales.

If Mercedes Cove isn’t on your bucket list, it should be and if you have already visited we would love to see you again.

Pet and Dave do recommend that you make a booking on 08 9192 4687 or via email on mercedescove@bigpond.com, so that you are not disappointed.

We look forward to welcoming you all to Mercedes Cove. Check out www.mercedescove.com.au for more information.
